photography: staging and distractions

clouds-road-sunshine-nature-photography-SwittersBI have this quirk: I try to avoid power lines, light poles, and such when staging a shot. There are times I will crop a shot to escape the lines, poles and signs of mankind. I don’t often do people, street life, urban chaos etc. I have considered doing more urban stuff but short of abandoned buildings, decay and such, I just don’t relate that often to what I see around me. Nature beckons, gardens beckon, mountains, trees, rivers and lakes. Throw a person into that mix and I struggle to feel it….unless it is someone I know.

Here my son, Tony, was fishing for Chinook this weekend. He hooked into a 10′ sturgeon. He is the focus here.

Sometimes the intrusion of people and things fly in the face of the overall scene.

Benchmarks: Photography (30 Years Apart)

Bucky 1983The above picture was taken on a cloudy, Fall day in 1983. The building is part of an old pioneer/indian village in The Dalles (Oregon). I thought it would be interesting to go back to this area and see if the village buildings were still standing and ask the model (my wife) to again pose in the same building window. So today we headed up to The Dalles. It was a cold, blustery Fall day. We located the same building/window from 1983 and attempted to set up the shot as before. The lighting was bright, the wind ferocious and the attire different. But, the outcome was successful! Most importantly, the model, wasn’t disappointed with the results.

Photography: Effectively Using Props……..

doggles1On a recent outing to Seaside, Oregon, we came upon a young man with a bicycle and basket mounted on front. Inside the basket was this little guy. The pup was calm and adept at posing as a stream of adoring young women made their way to ooooh and aaaah at the little guy. Not surprisingly, the young man enjoyed the attention. No he wasn’t selling the Doggles or the little Helmet. He just took in the attention having effectively used his props.

Photos: Unbalanced, Criss-Crossed, Mismatched

I am not as bad as the TV character Monk, but I like balance, equal spacing, rhyme and reason over unbalanced, crisscrossed, mismatched views. Yet, once in a while I find the chaotic in my random shots. Put them all together and my Monk-OCD side gets twitchy with the disjointed appearances. Somewhere within each photo is something pleasing to my eye…amidst the chaos.
