Shit My Dad Says (Can You Relate?)

Well, I have a mom that has been notorious to her grandchildren at checkout stands or fast food counters for creating embarrassing moments in time. You know, the charming remarks that linger in the air, like “I can’t believe that old lady just said that!” You can envision her offering scathing comments about service or prices or merchandise. Then turning toward my kid(s) and saying in a quite audible voice, “Give ’em shit and shove ’em in it”. Yes, classic  moments in time with Gram.

In that same vein is the Twitter site shitmydadsays.com

“Don’t mess with him … Trust me, you don’t fuck with a man that sleeps next to a woman he never screws. They’re unpredictable.” or

“I’m just gonna be me and they can go fuck themselves … Don’t care, that’s the only attitude you can have when you go to the DMV.”

Funny, gross, groaners, OMG’s abound. If you also have a cantankerous parent or in-law you will relate with an embarrassed wince and glance about to see who is listening. Justin chronicles his dad and the verbal gems that emerge during daily life.

Risk Avoidance: Timothy Treadwell, a Dream Chaser

Vodpod videos no longer available.

I was watching  a special on Timothy Treadwell re his 13 year Summer love fest with big bears. Of course, you probably know that did not end very well for Tim and his girlfriend,  Amie Huguenard. The footage that Treadwell gathered over the years (100 hours worth) is very enjoyable. Of course, knowing what ultimately happened to Treadwell, makes watching his close, euphoric positioning near the bears difficult to watch. A similar fate befell Vitaly Nikolayenko. But, I noted a few other interesting means of demise:

~401 BC: Mithridates, condemned for the murder of Cyrus the Younger, was executed by scaphism, surviving the insect torture 17 days. The scaphism is quite the ordeal.

~892 AD: Sigurd the Mighty of Orkney strapped the head of a defeated foe to his horse’s saddle, the tooth of which grazed against him as he rode, causing the infection that killed him. Don’t gloat over your successes.

~1771: Adolf Frederick, king of Sweden, died of digestion problems on 12 February 1771 after having consumed a meal consisting of lobster, caviar, sauerkraut, smoked herring and champagne, topped off with 14 servings of his favourite dessert: semla served in a bowl of hot milk.] He is thus remembered by Swedish schoolchildren as “the king who ate himself to death. Let this be a warning for some of you that celebrate over indulging of comida y bebidas.

~1814: London Beer Flood, 9 people were killed when 323,000 imperial gallons (1, 468, 000 L) of beer in the Meux and Company Brewery burst out of their vats and gushed into the streets.

Further Deaths of the Unusual Variety

You know, I shouldn’t really judge Treadwell now. I did (see earlier post). But, I figure his efforts improved our understanding of bears. So be it. He gave his life for it. I would have said careless, misguided etc. But really, think of all the pioneers, explorers, researchers, gold diggers etc that followed their dream to the point of death…some known, some upside down in a ravine and never found. They all set forth to chase dreams and out of that, amazing things resulted. At the expense of many that blazed a trail or lost the trail great things were discovered….much of what we strive to preserve today. Sometimes man should not be saved from himself…maybe, man should not be called upon to rescue the purposely careless.

OK, a criticism that annoys: symptomatic of the naivate…..Treadwell was filming a weasel as it threatened to ruin his shelter. He acknowledges the critter is about to destroy his shelter. But, he is confused upon what to do about it. ??? He feels guilty in scaring the weasel. That is the silliness of where man places himself equal to the weasel. That is nonsense. He doesn’t have to stomp upon the weasel. He needed to man up against the damn weasel to preserve his shelter. Common survival, entitled to, sense. Frankly, we become so obsessed with worry about our impact upon every amoeba that we lose track of our sense of survival…which, believe it or not is superior to other creatures… nah, nah…don’t waste your time with me about abuses of this or that…I am talking common sense, not green fever.

Gonzo Wading (Like 75mph/120kph through the neighborhood……)

Drowning by Catalyst

“There are a number of fishermen out there, myself included, that need a reminder now and then, that waders were invented to keep water out, not necessarily to increase the depth that waders could wade.”    Bish & Fish

Just a matter of time. Resist the temptation to match the fool, even if it pays off for him.

Most Dangerous Man in America (Bill Dance)

Yes, it is Bill Dance (although that bumbling Pinched Poser runs a close second). I did not link to the numerous videos of his bloopers…I was having trouble loading. Still worth a look though at a few of them. Can they be real? I think they look too real to be contrived…and dangerous!! My advice is if Bill Dance is anywhere near you on some private pond….get the hell away quick!

Fly Fishing Survival Considerations (Are You Prepared For The Worst?)

Red Sky Morning....... (SwittersB)

Red Sky Morning....... (SwittersB)

I have more gear and what if stuff in the back of my rig than a group of Explorer Scouts at a SAR Callout. But, often I hardly carry any gear with me once sauntering down the trail. Well, I am close to the truck, kind of. That is true more often than not. They would eventually find me upside down, over the embankment, where I slipped and tripped over the tree root that hooked my toe….eventually. Or, that short walk down to the drift results in “I think I will move on down below those rapids and fish there.” A mere 200 yards from the p-u.

The point is that, if alone, you have slipped, fallen, stumbled, broken rods, twisted your ankle, slipped atop boulders with wet boots on gritty sand, walked into bushes and branches narrowly missing your eyes, fallen so hard you had to stop and consider if you can actually break your ass. Well, maybe you haven’t but I have. I am clumsy at times. The older I get the more clumsy I seem to become. I recently mentioned a loss of hip/leg strength contributing to poor wading and I know it affects me boulder hopping and moving up and down muddy embankments crisscrossed with protruding roots.

I should be more prepared and certainly be prepared on a cold afternoon, when injured, to ride out the hours into the night or the next morning to avoid hypothermia and shock. This article by Kirston Koths is entitled How To Survive Fly Fishing (Preparing For Being Lost, Injured, and Other Angling Emergencies) is informative and a reminder to carry survival gear with you, not just in the back of your rig.

“The most likely serious injury that might happen while fishing is a gash, incapacitating sprain, or broken/dislocated bone as a result of falling. Over two hundred search-and-rescue operations occur in Yosemite each year, many for hiker with broken ankles.”

Swine Flu (Beat the odds…fish)

As we head into another flu season and the inevitable paranoia and relentless media overload…it is apparent that to avoid the coverage and the germ laden door handles and airborne gunk…we should be outside in the cold waving the two hander or single hander and chasing our favorite species through this physical and mental ordeal. Bundle up. Risk a cold. Stay physically active and stay away from the infirm if you can. Course, those of us that have to enter confined spaces and the unwashed….take precautions and escape as you can.
