Fly Tying, Porn Shops & the Worm

I have touched upon this before when I highlighted how to tie a version of the Vladi Worm using a Pink Condom. At the time, I remarked that it was hard to find a pink condom without walking into a porn arcade and perusing the lubes, toys, etc. and maybe having to sort through the color offerings of available condoms. Mail order options seemed limited and sketchy.

Earlier today, I was answering a comment question about the materials make up of a fly pattern. I recalled I had purchased a nice material from Performance Flies in Ohio. I went to PF to find the link to the materials section for the commenter. While doing so, I noticed that Performance Flies now offers Pink Condoms for the Vladi Worm. No more walking into the porn arcade for pink condoms.

condom sbA how to use the condom segment is in order. Because the condoms are lubricated, your fingers will get slick  while cutting the sections. Your other materials and tools will get lubed up so paper towels or such to occasionally wipe off some of the lube is helpful.

The weighted Vladi Worm is a great dredging pattern to get down and perhaps take another pattern deeper.

Fly Tying: Condom Worm 2 (I Promise This Is It)

I tied a few of these this weekend and received a comment (Josh McFadden @ hatchhunters.com) that I shouldn’t use an under layer of chenille, or anything but flattened lead and multiple layers of the wrapped condom. I experimented, based upon those suggestions, and it was a better result. Also, I used an orange condom rather than red (I haven’t tried the Vladi Pink). I liked the color potential here. The darker central portion was the securing thread wraps over the flattened lead. After quite a few thread wraps the black thread shows through. If I wanted to lose that affect, I might choose a different color thread. Not sure I want to.

Fly Tying: Czech Nymph or Scud Pattern

Czech Nymph, Scud, Pupa, Larva Imitation~SwittersB

A great beginner’s pattern and it will catch fish world wide. Most often considered a Czech Nymph, mine is slightly different in that I don’t include an under-ribbing (see GFF tutorial). It seems to get lost for me, so I stay with the more traditional scud tie of a single ribbing over the shellback.

The hook is a large scud/pupa hook: size 12 (this can be tied large (8) to small (16)). The thread here is 8/0 tan. The ribbing is tied in first at the bend. The ribbing is 4# clear mono. A tan scud shellback is then tied in at the same spot as the wire ribbing. Both the ribbing and shellback are allowed to hang to the rear. The abdomen material is tan rabbit fur, which I twist/dubbed onto the thread. I then wrapped the tan dubbing up the shank 2/3’s of the way. Then I dubbed with a blend of a little peacock Ice Dub and green rabbit fur for the thorax area and made it slightly thicker than the abdomen. Note many Czech Nymphs are usually uniform in thickness rear to front. Then I gently pulled the shellback over the top of the abdomen/thorax out over the hook eye to impart a little stretch (don’t pull too tight and snap the shellback). Tie off the shellback with your off hand and cut off the excess. Make sure the thread wraps are tight enough to secure the shellback. Now wrap the ribbing up the body in equidistant turns and tie it off at the head. Then form a nice thread head and finish.

There are a multitude of color combinations. I did not weight this pattern, but it is normally heavily weighted and fished as a dredging pattern…short line and dredged along setting on any bump. I have posted several earlier posts about Cz Nymphing. Search upper right for all kinds of info…also look at the Vladi Worm for an interesting pattern that will challenge your materials securing skills.

Aquatic Worm for Fly Fishing (an option between the San Juan Worm & Finding pink condoms at a porn shop or titty bar restroom)

The standard San Juan Worm in red or brown often works well. I have the recipe for the Vladi Worm (Pink Condom Worm) in my archives as well (query Vladi Condom Worm in search box). But, I know from personal experience and I acknowledge that in certain parts of the world you can probably find pink, red or lime green condoms with ease. Where I live the typical condom is a standard off white latex color. In titty bars there are machines in he restrooms (I have this on good authority) that dispense colorful condoms. Also, I have been told or come to know that porn shops have varied colors of condoms in not only pink, but red and green. So, unless you can walk into your local pharmacy or Walgreens and buy pink condoms you are going to have to enter the world of poles, dollar bills, disco balls, leering men, glory holes etc. to acquire the correctly colored condom…perhaps they can be ordered via mail.

Excuse me ladies, ah can you tell me where the pink condoms are?

Excuse me ladies, ah can you tell me where the pink condoms are?

To the point, the above pattern combines the brown and red micro chenille into a nice looking worm pattern. Tied similar to the ordinary San Juan Worm, this patter combines two colors and the attractor color of the clitellum:          (http://urbanext.illinois.edu/worms/anatomy/anatomy4.html

     What’s an Aquatic Worm?

“Let’s cut through the BS, learn about aquatic worms, and see how and when to use them to optimize your fishing success.  For the biologic Latin geeks out there, aquatic worms (hereafter just referred to just as “worms”) are members of the phylum Annelida (Annelids) and the Class Oligochaeta (Oligochaetes).  To put it simply, aquatic worms are just a water-breathing version of an earthworm.  Put an earthworm in the water, it drowns.;  Put an aquatic worm in the dirt, and it suffocates.  Water breathing worms live in just about every trout stream; it’s just a question of whether they exist in sufficient numbers to be a significant trout food.  If they do, you should use flies which imitate them!”

I have previously highlighted the Vladi Worm/Pink Condom Fly. I think it is the perfect creation for a heavily weighted point fly while dredging the bottom, ala Czech or Polish Nymphing. The traditional version of the San Juan Worm is unweighted, save the hook and the usual split shot is most often used to sink the fly. The addition of the beads is akin to any bead head fly..added weight, a little flash and more efficient at sinking and tumbling the fly.

So, if you just can’t find those pink condoms or some form of pink latex, then stay with the San Juan Worm and mix up the chenille colors. The link below is informative on how to tie a simple variation of the SJW. A little banjo music included.

‘Vladi Worm Replaces the San Juan Worm’ (at least it should)

I am reposting ‘The Vladi Worm’/’Pink Condom Worm’ because it has been buried in the old archives to some degree and I note recent B.C. traffic and want to share it with them as a stream/river option, if they are not already aware of it. The catch, find the color options in condoms or some other latex option. I would want to experiment in not only the pink but perhaps a lighter green. The link has an excellent attachment on how to construct the ‘worm’. I have not been able to try this yet so interested in how it is to tie and fish. But, it looks great, I am sure you agree, and a darn site better looking than the San Juan Worm, albeit longer to tie. Let me know! An earlier gentleman in a prior post, commented upon I believe Crown Condoms providing the right color. Perhaps someone will have to venture into the porn shop to query ‘do you have pink condoms, or green, a lighter green?’ Blank stare.

Pink Condoms & the Vladi Worm

The Vladi (Vladi Trzebunia) Worm is a weighted imitation of an aquatic worm. It is shown in the tutorial site below. Now, I am faced with searching out bubble gum pink condoms or perhaps lime green ones as well. Never paid much attention to the colorized versions so this will be an interesting search. I wonder if there are alternative materials? Note the one important tip the author gives on leaving the condom rolled up (as it comes out of the wrapper) and then cutting it into halves/quarters, then unrolling it. He didn’t mention lubed/non-lubed. The ‘fly’ looks much more enticing than a San Juan Worm, yet I wonder if this is yet another example of how silly fisherman are in following all manner of unique/obsessive edicts from promoters of the latest and greatest.     http://www.flyguysoutfitting.com/vladiworm.html
