Yellowstone Bison Slaughter Commences…Proud Management Effort

Home on the Range

“Oh, give me a home, where the buffalo roam
Where the deer and the antelope play
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day.”

There is a plan to relocate Bison from Yellowstone Park to Indian Reservations where they will subsequently be slaughtered. This well thought out effort by man to control habitat smacks up against my head and addles the mind. So much for wildlife management and the  oft vaunted Native American sensitivities to nature and the interconnectedness to of man to earth. I really don’t care about the science here…man/science keeps screwing up….seems there would be more available habitat transfers in U.S./Canada (public/private) before slaughter. I don’t want Bison Burgers either. Bison Slaughter Underway

Fly Fishing Yellowstone Park (Served Up?)

“.. There is a gargantuan dose of truth with a capital “T” in fly fishing. Probably because the truth-tellers are affable, congenial, smiling salesmen.
.. We all want the truth. We want it as we want life itself – handed to us on a silver platter. Then we can use it.” Yesterdays Gone (FF Yellowstone Park)

Some very good points for the novice FFer and/or the traveling fisher. How does one prepare for such a trip? I have about ten books on Montana. I have never been yet. May never make it. But, one thing I do know is the info in the books (maps, roads, remarks, campgrounds) may have changed by the time I make it. I learned this years ago when I took up backpacking. I, again, bought numerous books. And, more often than not, the info was dated, inaccurate or quite incomplete. Now, why did I so need that info in advance of the trip?

For me, to avoid wasting precious time. I wanted to maximize the time I had allowed and not waste it on dead ends. This is not an altogether unwarranted opinion, if one has limited time off and considers the trip not just another feather in the cap of trips, but rather a unique one. Time not to be squandered, so for some guarantees are sought rather than probabilities..

But, in all of this fly fishing endeavor there has to be an element of risk, failure, lost opportunities and yes, wasted time. If you need guarantees, the ‘silver platter’, then go to a trout farm.

HellIfIKnow Streamer Pattern

HellIfIKnow Streamer Pattern

Recipe for “HELLIFIKNOW”

Tail: dyed red squirrel, or red synthetic fibers, Body: silver tinsel, (mylar works, we use French metal,) Beard: reddish brown rump feather fibers from golden pheasant, Head: red thread. Hook: heavy nymph, size 4-12. Fish on short light leader in shallow clear water or long heavy leader in colored water. Brookies, Grayling, and other precocious young trout take this just the way a Bluegill takes an empty gold-plated hook.

Yellowstone’s Underground Caldera (yes busy underneath, but still some time to fish)

Yellowstone Caldera

Yellowstone Caldera

“One way of looking at the power of volcanoes is what scientists call the Volcano Explosivity Index (VEI) — sort of a Richter scale for eruptions. And like the Richter scale used to measure earthquakes, the power of an eruption increases exponentially from number to number in the VEI index.”

Mega Caldera

“The crater left by a super volcanic eruption is called a mega caldera. In Yellowstone National Park there is a mega caldera measuring about 34 miles across. Experts know of at least three occasions in which the Yellowstone super volcano has erupted: 2.2 million years ago, 1.3 million years ago, and 640,000 years ago. If Yellowstone keeps to this schedule, we still have about half a million years til the next eruption. Geologist Chuck Wicks of the U.S. Geological Survey says explosions of this magnitude “happen about every 600,000 years.” Yellowstone, if it sticks to its history, isn’t due just yet,….”
