During the hoarding cleanup, I must confess there was quite a bit of rusty cast iron cooking implements. Frankly, a lot of it went bye bye, rather than making the effort to clean it up. My dad always used cast iron fry pans when camping, cooking over a wood fire (Hoarding Woes & You)
I love my cast iron skillets and dutch oven…once you clean it just rub some oil in on it and it is awesome:) Lasts forever:) Cooks amazing….foods taste incredible:)

Replace the potato with some newspaper, and that is exactly how my great-grandfather taught me how to care for the cast iron
My dad as well, although he never let that pan get that out of shape.
